About Us

How we started

Seeds of Peace was birthed in 2011 at First Creek Middle School, a Title 1 school located on the east side of Tacoma. After a series of gang-related shootings that took place around the school and neighboring community, founder Fahren Johnson was compelled to create a space for young people to process, heal, and contemplate a better future for themselves.  It started off as a Saturday conversation over pizza in the school cafeteria with staff and community members and flourished into a city and county-wide initiative.

Seeds of Peace became a hub for young people to organize and activate through service projects and events promoting collaboration and partnership between youth, their peers, and their community. They wanted their voice and ideas to be heard—not just to talk about peace, but to drive positive action. They wanted to be the seed planters of peace in their schools and communities.

Our mission is to empower youth through prevention, awareness, and action.

Rooted in our vision to be community-powered and youth-driven, we activate safe spaces within expanded learning ecosystems through youth-centered projects and events, workshops, training sessions, mentorship opportunities, policy initiatives, and advocacy efforts.
